GIRLBRAND 0059 - DEVIL GIRL WITH BONES

Chris James Larsen aus Tucson, Arizona, baute diese einzigartige Girlbrand-Gitarre namens "Devil Girl with Bones".

Chris James Larsen from Tucson Arizona built this unique Girlbrand guitar named "Devil Girl with Bones"

geschraubter Ahornhals, 648 mm Mensur, Knochensattel.

bolt on maple neck, 25.5 inch scale, bone nut.

Ebony fretboard with skeleton-inlay consisting of over 120 pieces!

Chris used this inlay design at least for three more girlbrand guitars that however, have different looking tops.

Looks like Chris has some engraving machine that helps adjusting the pearl and abalone pieces precisely to the fretboard routing. This is a perfectly executed inlay job!

The body is hollow except for a piece of wood right under the bride and the neck pocket and consists of a rim made of aluminum holding the formica back and the acrylic top of the guitar. We know this construction from 50s and 60s style diner tables. A cool contrast to this precious and unique inlay is the fact that the body`s back is made of this cheap formica, the stuff that was used on old Danelectro guitars. That is typical vor Chris`work. He finds a good balance between trash and sophistication, simpleness and luxury, expensive beauty and cheap pragmatism, ernest and irony...

The top is see-thru acrylic painted from the inside by artist Janet K. Miller.

Beautiful variation of that famous Telecaster headstock design. The font reminds me of Art-Déco and the drawing shows what a great draftsman Chris Larsen is. What a pitty he doesn`t draw comics as well...

Definitely the coolest string-tree in the guitar-building industry if not in the history of mankind is this thing here. Nothing but a simple butterfly nut and it works perfectly.

I asked Chris and Janet about these bones and what the whole idea behind this design was. In 2002 when I got this guitar my children were still so young that they were scared of these siamese twin devils on the guitar`s top.

I `d rather feel sorry for these twins. I think it is hard enough to cope with oneself, especially when you`re a guitar player, which means that having some mental issues is normal... But imagine you have two of this kind to get along with! What fun it must be to be comnnected constantly to your ugly and depressive twin brother?

So this guitar top is a challenge for every shrink and hobby psychologist. Iconic bones like an oracle, some pirate style look, some memento mori and then these poor devils...

Neither Chris nor Janet wanted to help me with my interpretation of this design although they proved to be very friendly and helpful otherwise. I guess they already knew that you don`t have to analyse and discuss everything and anything...

When in 2002 I discovered the Girlbrand guitars while I was surfing the internet I decided at once that I wanted one. The same day I found this guitar, Devil Girl With Bones, that Neal`s Music in Huntington Beach, California offered for sale. It was used but like new, and it was the only Girlbrand that was for sale in the whole www. So I took it.

Later the same day I discovered Michael Spalt`s "Totem Guitars" with their fantastic resin tops and fell in love with those pieces of art, too. There even was a moment of doubt, when I felt that I should have bought a Totem instead of a Girlbrand. But the deal with Neal`s Music had be done already and all my money was gone.

It took almost nine years before I was able to buy a Totem guitar, too. But buying the Girlbrand first proved to be the right decision, since unfortunately Chris has stopped building guitars in the meantime and the value of his instruments has risen to amounts that I could never afford. Some Girlbrands are listed for 5000 $ now, (I payed 1900 $) but I don`t now how much demand there is. I think beeing so original, unique and artistically interesing they are worth every cent and highly collectable. Once I had it in my hands and had played it I `ve never repented for a second that I bought this crazy little guitar, which is very well built instrument and a fantastic player indeed.

It doesn`t sound anything like thin, boxy or tinny just because it is hollow or due to the aluminum rim and the cheapo formica back. Not like "carton" and not like a Danelctro at all. It sounds as good and as alive as any well built wooden hollowbody or as a Trussart guitar. Warm, full and loud, never shrill or harsh. Beautiful and strong round bass sounds, good sustain, enough middle and top end warmth.

The maple neck is fat and full, the medium high but narrow frets are perfectly dressed and you can play effortlessly for hours. So apart from all the crazyness this is a very good guitar.

So why for christ sakes did you stop building guitars, Chris? What a shame....

Didn`t you have enough famous endorsers? There is an album by Meredith Brooks (Bitch) with her girlbrand guitar on the sleeve and of course Henry Kaiser owns (at least) one too. This guy seems to own one guitar from every luthier anyway. (Yes, I`m envious.)

Chris wrote me once how hard it is to make a living out of guitar building. Even asking 4000 $ for an instument doesn`t provide much profit as long as you do everything yourself and by hand and with such a great love to detail and experimenting, as Chris does with all these time consuming inlays and his ambition to make every single guitar top look different than all the others before.

The pickups and wiring are hand- and homemade by Chris too and are very unique as well. The system was developped by his friend Dave Schecter who was the founder of "Schecter guitars" in the 70s or 80s and is some kind of godfather of all custom shop builders and guitar tinkerers in the world. Today he has nothing to do with the guitar company that still owns his name and although Schecter guitars are nice and interesting still today, they have little in common with what Schecter guitars was in the 80s.

These two Girlbrand singlecoils are conntected to a regular Gibson-style three-way-toggle-switch but there are two more toggles, one for each pickup. They bring in one of two handbuilt transformer (one per pickup) that are hidden under the pickguard to alter the sound. You can switch from bright (without transformer) to fat to even fatter individually per pickup and thus get 15 switching options... All sounds are beautiful, rootsy, classic and classy! Not for heavy metal, maybe not for fusion and strongly processed tones, because there is allways some single coil hum, but great for everything else. (Like pickup guru Bill Lawrence said "It doesn`t sound well if it doesn`t hum.) Connected to an amp the Girlbrand proves that there is a strong relation to the Telecaster. There is plenty of twang and bite and sparkle spiced with an accoustic, airy touch and openness. But the bridge pickup can also sound bone-dry and rock, depending on the transformer-switch position. The neck pickup has soulful depth and warmth to die for. It is the best mix of wood and schmalz you`ve ever heard and you just don`t want to stop playing...

(This must be the best sounding neck pickup in the universe next to a Lollar Charlie Christian.)

GUITAR CONFORMISM

Isn`t it strange that you don`t see any stars playing and posing with special guitars like this? What are stars good for? Aren`t they artists? Isn`t it their job to push the boundaries forward, to be "special" and crazier than the rest of us, the normal, boring folks?

Why is it that we see 968`000 rockstars with the same old bashed `63 Fender Strat (custom shop reissue)? What is the message? "Well, I`m a sophisticated player, just like ANYBODY else..."

Then there is that "hard working" guy. Primitive but simple, straightforward, honest and modest. Guys like Bruce Stringsteel. In that case you HAVE to play a butterscotch blonde `52 Tele ...right?

Yes, 278`003 blokes out there want to be like that. It is almost like wearing an uniform.

And then there are these other types, them soulful manly men with cowboy boots. They all want this all original `59 burst Les Pauls...

Just another way of dressing up like you wore a uniform...

Don`t get me wrong, old confrmist! I love these guitars too. I envy those who have originals or outstanding reissues...

But as long as we are talking about being artists, how backward-looking can you be to still have some credibility left?

If it is that Tele, that Strat or that Les Paul that everybody else poses with, that should give you credibility, then you havn`t understood what beeing an artist is really all about. So do you wanna be a real artist and express something relevant to your own time or is it good enough to dress up exactly the same as 765`954 clichés before you?

Folklore, not art.

Volcanic Pickup Corp. is Chris` own pickup brand and in the way these pickups are designed and constructed (following a Dave Schecter idea) they are totally unique to the world of electric gutars.

Both clean or with some light overdrive the neck pickup is the most divine sounding thing that I know.

See the trussrod nut? Mark that also the neck pickup has three adjustment screws...good idea.
See the trussrod nut? Mark that also the neck pickup has three adjustment screws...good idea.

... äh ... Alles klar?

Every Girlbrand guitar has it`s own terminology to describe the two pickup sounds on that ring around the toggle switch. These words are embossed into the plastic. In this case the words are "cranial" for the bridge pickup and and "caudal" for the neck position (Of course there is a middle position as well, but no word to describe it.)

At least for us german speaking fellows it isn`t easy to understand these terms unless you`re a physician, a latin student or some other lunatic. It means more or less "belonging to the skull" respectively "towards the tail". It is funny however, that Chris located the cranium near the bidge and defined the guitar neck as a tail. Isn`t there a so called "headstock" at the the end of it ? Well, ... uhm ...what? My English is simply not good enough for this.

Master volume and master tone pots and two three-way-switches. One for each singlecoil pickup. These switches add a transformator and fatten the sound lightly or even more. This system is passive, works great and is totally unique!

Fallujagirl which on other occasions was called "Guernicagirl" (above) and Reliquarygirl or "Relicgirl" by Chris Larsen both use (almost) the same fretboard inlay like my Larsen guitar, but don`t belong to me, unfortunately. No idea who owns these guitars. The top paintings looks like another collaboration with Janet K. Miller.

This "Moby-Dick-Girl" doesn`t exist. It is just a digital sketch that I made up and sent to Chris Larsen. The shape of the pickguard, which is the same on all girlbrands reminded me of a sperm whale on a painting that I once did.

Of course this inlay has nothing to do with the Moby-Dick-idea. I just left it as it was on the original photo which showed the Burgergirl (see below). Again a guitar that I don`t own....forchrissakes!

Chris is such a creative genius that he doesn`t need to take "good advice" from me when it comes to building great guitars. So I guess I will have to build this Moby-Dick-guitar myself.

Ins Sternbild "Cetus", also Walfisch, hineingezwängt erscheint hier Moby Dick, platt, grafisch und plakativ.

The constellation of the stars and the coordinates show "cetus", the whale. Fitting inside is this giant white shape, totally flat, abstract and without details. This is not just an animal, not an individual. It comes across "larger than life", rather like a cliché or maybe like a scary superpower on a map, the superelevated image of an archenemy how the leader sees it in his paranoid mind. Who that leader is? Captain Ahab of course. But could also be compared to another american leader during the cold war maundering about the "kingdom of evil". That however was my interpretation of that fantastic novel "Moby Dick" in the 80s before the cold war ended. (And just to make sure you don`t get me wrong... NO, I`m not a communist and I never was and never will be. I never felt I wanted to defend the commiunists! And YES, I`m glad that they and the sowjet union all disappeared in the garbage can of world history.)

As model for the ship "Pequod" I chose the last existing whaling ship from the 19th century, the "Charles W. Morgan", that can be seen in that open air museum Mystic Seaport, Conneticut. (Very recommendable!) Interestingly, on many pictures the "Charles W. Morgan" is a fullrigger, but on some it is a barque as well,  like the "Pequod" on my painting.) Since I was a kid I `ve had a mug with that ship on it and I admired it for over 20 years  before I got a chance to go onboard the real ship...

(I know that killing whales is politically incorrect and I have always been totally against it! I admire tall sailing ships and whales, not that whales were hunted and killed! But nevertheless the novel "Moby Dick" is one of the best books ever written.)

Girlbrand Burgergirl.

Grosses Kino!

Girlbrand Burgergirl. Another guitar that I don`t own. Unfortunately!

The special thing about it are these "windows" showing burgers, french fries and sausages made of plastic. What a great way to convince potential customers of your restaurant if you put that fake food in your window! Yeah, our cooking is so fine that the food is as tasty as real plastic waste! Yummy!

I don`t know how successfull these special Girlbrand guitars were but I guess Chris` sense of humor, his irony, his esprit and creativity may have been a bit too scary for the average guitar-playing enthusiast... As an artist, he`s a painter as well, Chris may be ahead of his time while most of us stubborn conservative guitarists prefer to admire designs that are 50 or 60 years old.

There is a link on Chris`website where to find that company that sells this fake food. Great fun!

Girlbrand Tacogirl

Tacogirl was offered to me from Westwood Music in Los Angeles. The offer came too late. It was a reply to my mail from the previous day, when I had been searching the internet for any Girlbrand guitar I could buy. That had been the very same day I had discoverd Chris Larsons work and found and bought my Devil Girl with Bones. It was april 23th 2002, the offer came on 24th.

I realized that I liked Tacogirl even better than my Devil Girl. She is more beautiful and that fake-food-in-the window-thing is even more crazy than the siamese devils and all those bones... But the deal I had with Neal`s Music was done and Tacogirl would also have been more expensive.

No idea who`s playing with her now...

Gut so!

GOOD NEWS

Chris informes me that he is building guitars again! Very glad to hear that.

Check out his latest guitars, built to military specs! Yes, they are different from the Girlbrands, even more radical, and consequently Chris has a new website to promote them.

Rock`n` Roll and army ? ... How ironic is that? Chris is such a crazy genius! Check out the video clip on this site!

Generation gibt (M-9 Mk 4)

SEHR SEHENSWERT:

Ein youtube Videoclip,

in dem Chris seine

M-9 Mk4 Gitarre

und ihren Gebrauch mit

einem i-phone

genau erklärt:

The old GIRLBRAND website seems to be totally dead meanwhile, unfortunately

Looks like the biggest collection of Girlbrand Guitar fotos on the web is mine (click the link bellow). But I can show you only about 50 instruments while there is no doubt that Chris must have built a lot more, considering that my "Devil Girl With bones" is number 59.

It is nearly impossible to get more information from Chris himself. All he wrote to me is that  seeing my girlbrand gallery he was wondering where he got the energy from to built all these guitars. He doesn`t feel like coming up with a new Girlbrand Website on his own nor trying to find more fotos of more "girls" in his archive.

He seems to prefer the work on his M-9 instruments with "military specifications" where he arrived at the 4th generation already, called the M-9 MK4.
